He has since relocated to Thailand & now teaches affiliate marketing to others through Commission Academy.

Quick answer: Yes, many international students do affiliate marketing to support themselves while studying abroad. You can work around your study schedule and it costs next to nothing to generate a solid income, making it perfect for students. Tap here to get started.

I decided to become an affiliate marketer because I needed a way to make money while I was studying in Thailand. It needed to be something I could do anytime and anywhere.

After doing a lot of research, affiliate marketing was the best fit for me because it meant I could put in the extra effort during the holidays and still have money coming in once the school term started again.

Little did I know back then that it would turn into a lucrative and rewarding career.

So yes, I can tell you from personal experience you can do affiliate marketing as an international student and you can do very well with it.

Just be sure to check the laws of the country you’re studying in to make sure you’re not violating the terms of your student visa.

For example, if you’re an international student in the US on an F-1 visa then you’re allowed to work 20 hours a week during term time and up to 40 hours a week during breaks.

In the UK, you are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week during term-time and full-time during holiday breaks depending on what you’re studying.

International students in Canada can work 20 hours per week during term time and as much as they like during breaks. And in Australia, student visa holders can work 48 hours every fortnight.

Why Affiliate Marketing Is Best For International Students

So you need a way to make money as an international student.

Sure, you could do freelancing, online tutoring or dropshipping…

But seriously why bother when affiliate marketing is the king of side hustles? 👑

Whatever:

  • Country you’re in
  • Qualifications you have
  • Language you speak
  • Your age or background

It really doesn’t matter.

While some affiliate programs may have specific requirements, everything is done online and affiliate marketers get paid via PayPal so you can work anywhere regardless of if you’re a student or not.

And affiliate marketing is great for students because it’s:

  • Easy to start
  • Super flexible
  • Highly profitable

And because you’re making money selling other people’s products, there’s no need to make or ship products yourself and all the customer service is taken care of by the online store you’re promoting.

You recommend products you believe in and make a percentage on every sale.

How To Start Affiliate Marketing In 5 Proven Steps

Anyone can do affiliate marketing but not everyone will be successful.

Follow these 5 steps to ensure you give yourself the strongest start possible.

1. Join The Academy 🎓

You need a track to run on. A proven roadmap to follow.

This’ll help you avoid the common affiliate marketing mistakes so you can make money sooner.

And the good news is you needn’t pay an arm and a leg to get the proper step-by-step training.

Take the free Commission Academy course and we’ll walk you through how to make money with affiliate marketing in a way that works.

2. Pursue Your Passion ❤️‍🔥

In Lesson 3 of the course, you’ll be assigned the task of choosing an affiliate niche.

This is a key step many beginners get wrong because they’re chasing dollar signs and that’s the wrong way to go about it.

Instead, pick a topic you have a decent level of interest or experience in – it could be your college major or your favourite hobby – anything you love to talk about.

Follow your passion and you’ll enjoy doing affiliate marketing more and you’ll likely be better at it.

3. Set A Budget 💰

You don’t need much money to get started, but you will need some.

I’d recommend setting aside a $ 50-a-month budget for:

  • A domain name
  • Hosting
  • A keyword tool

This will give you everything you need to create a 6-figure income.

4. Allocate Specific Time ⏰

The beauty of affiliate marketing is it’s super flexible, but you still want to be intentional about when you put in the work if you want to make serious commissions.

Take a look at your study schedule and be realistic about how many hours a week you can commit to.

5. Get Expert Support 🤝

As you start your affiliate marketing journey there are going to be plenty of opportunities to mess up, get distracted and take a wrong turn that could end up costing you time and money.

This is what affiliate marketing mentors are for.

Dale and I have 20+ years combined experience at this, we’ve messed up a ton and learned a lot through trial and error so you don’t have to.

You can ask questions and get answers within the core training or better yet, you can join one of our weekly live hangouts and get instant help and advice.

  1. Hi i am an international student and on OPT status right now in America. I would like to know if you have any idea whether I can do affiliate marketing in US while on OPT status and if not, can i register a company and under what basis to not have any legal issues later on?

    • Hello & thanks for the question. As your question is so specific I’d have to advise that you contact a financial professional as I’m afraid I’m unable to provide financial advice for individual situations. Would love it if you could come back here & provide your findings, though. That would be much appreciated.

  2. Hey, I’m an international student in Canada and I’m confused about the requirements to do affiliate marketing. Will getting the extra income affect my permant residence by any way.

    • Essentially; income from affiliate marketing is just treat the same as a regular income from a job or business. You just need to make sure that you pay your taxes on any money earned accordingly. I’m personally unaware of any thresholds that would result in this affecting permenant residence, but I would strongly advise you check with a local accountant for clarification.

  3. Hi
Im an international student in Australia and I want to do affiliate marketing but I’m confused that i have to apply for ABN to proceed with affiliate marketing or i can work with TFN.

    • Affiliate marketing is still a business, even though it’s done online. After doing some research about your specific situation, I found that whether you need an ABN may depend on how much you earn. So I would recommend consulting an accountant or tax professional for more advice.
