If you’ve spent any amount of time looking into content marketing or search engine optimization then evergreen content is likely a phrase you’ve come across.

But what is evergreen content? What does evergreen mean in marketing?

And most importantly, how can evergreen blog posts enable you to generate a completely passive income?

Well, if those are some of the things you’ve been wondering you can rest assured that you’ve landed in the right place as that’s exactly what we’re going to cover right here in this article.

So without further ado, let’s dive right in, starting from the top…

What Does Evergreen Mean In Marketing?

In short, the word evergreen essentially means “lasts forever” when it comes to marketing & it’s a term that can be used when referring to various different things.

For example, if you’ve found a marketing method that will work forever (or at least for a very long time), then you could call that an “evergreen method”.

Or similarly, if you create an advertising campaign without an expiration date then you could call that an evergreen campaign.

Make sense?

And when used to talk about content, it means pretty much the same thing, as we’ll explain below.

What Is Evergreen Content?

After reading what evergreen means in the previous section you may be thinking “but all content lasts forever, what’s different about evergreen content?“.

And the difference is pretty simple.

Evergreen content refers to a piece of content that’s related to a topic that will continue to receive searches through search engines forever (or for a very, very long time).

You see, whilst all content “lasts forever” in the sense that it will stay online for as long as you keep your website online (or wherever you published it)… Some content is only relevant for a certain period of time.

Content that is set to become irrelevant at some point is not evergreen. Evergreen content is a piece of content that, essentially doesn’t ever become irrelevant.

Evergreen Content Example

As an example, imagine you published a product review. This review would generally only be relevant for as long as the product that you reviewed is being marketed.

If the manufacturer produces a new model or discontinues the product for some reason then that review would essentially become irrelevant & after a period of time people would stop searching for it.

This means that your review would stop attracting traffic (visitors) to your website from search engines.

Evergreen content, on the other hand, is timeless.

So a good example of an evergreen piece of content would be an article like this one that you’re reading right now here at Commission Academy.

The reason that’s classed as evergreen content is that evergreen content is always going to exist & there’s always going to be people wondering what it is.

So ultimately, this page will never become irrelevant.

After an initial one-time effort of being created & published, this page could continue to generate visitors for many, many years to come.

But that likely raises another question.

Should You Only Publish Evergreen Blog Posts?

If you’re looking to leverage search engine marketing & SEO to drive visitors to your website or blog through content creation then, after reading the above, you may be under the impression that it would be pointless to publish anything other than evergreen content.

After all, why would you want to waste your efforts creating something that could become irrelevant if you could just spend the same energy creating something that would be evergreen & timeless instead?

Well, the answer is because of competition.

Many people see the value in evergreen content & evergreen is much more of a finite resource meaning that the competition is much higher.

That doesn’t mean it’s impossible to rank evergreen content, it just means it may take more time for you to do so… And that’s why you should publish a mix of both evergreen content & regular content (like product reviews).

Typically, content like a product review will have much lower competition in the search engines meaning you’ll be able to rank for it more quickly & easily.

So whilst your traffic may be short-lived when you compare it against an evergreen piece of content, you’ll generally be able to start earning from those pieces more easily.

How Can You Come Up With Evergreen Content Ideas?

Coming up with evergreen content ideas is actually pretty darn easy & that’s mainly because the evergreen ideas just revolve around the questions related to your niche.

You see, we know product reviews go out of date… And “how-to” articles will need updating at some point… But generally, most questions are pretty timeless.

For example “what is evergreen content” is a timeless piece of evergreen content related to content creation & affiliate marketing.

So, finding evergreen content ideas is simply about producing lists of questions relevant to your niche & then asking yourself, “would this information ever need to change?”.

If the answer is no, you’ve found yourself a golden piece of evergreen content.

And as a bit of a “hack” to easily find questions related to your niche, you can simply leverage a Quora search as shown in the example below:

Quora Search Example

All you need to do, as shown in the example below, is simply search for “site:quora.com” & then follow it with some keywords related to your niche.

That will then pull up all of the questions that people have been asking on Quora related to your niche & then you can use those for evergreen content ideas.

And from the example above, you can see that those first 3 results are actually all great evergreen content ideas.

The Bottom Line

Evergreen content is definitely the best type of content to create because once it gets ranked in search engines, it can continue generating traffic (visitors to your page) for many years to come.

The downside, however, is that there is a finite resource of evergreen content ideas & as a result, the terms are generally more competitive to rank for.

But the good news is that all you need to do is simply leverage regular content, such as product reviews, alongside your evergreen content.

That’s a sure-fire way to build a successful affiliate marketing business through SEO & it’s the same method we teach in our free course here at Commission Academy.
