So you’ve built a website on Wix & now you’ve either decided that you no longer want it & want to sell it or you’ve realized just how bad the Wix platform actually is & simply want to get away from it.
The question is, though, can you actually sell a Wix website? And if so, how do you do it?
Well, you can rest assured you’ve landed in exactly the right place to find out because on this page we’re going to explain the best (and fastest) way to sell a Wix website.
So without further ado, let’s dive straight in, starting with the big question.
Can You Sell a Wix Website?
Put simply, yes – you can sell a Wix website. Although it’ll be a little more tricky than selling a “normal” website, it’s certainly possible to do it.
And the other good news is that from as far as we can see, Wix appears to allow website sales as well.
Well, we say they appear to allow it but what we really mean is that we can’t find anything in their terms that says they don’t allow it.
Almost the same thing… Kinda.
The only issue though is that because Wix uses its own custom CMS (content management system), you’ll need to essentially sell your full Wix account in order to sell the website, as the websites aren’t transferrable.
(that’s one of the main reasons we don’t recommend Wix for affiliate marketing)… Or, for anything.
You see, in short, Wix is essentially designed in a way to make it really easy for you to join & build a website, but really hard for you to leave & move it elsewhere.
Not cool.
So if you want to sell your Wix website, you’ll essentially have to sell your full Wix account & transfer the username & password to the buyer. It’s a bit riskier than a typical website sale but if you’re stuck with a Wix site & want to sell it, unfortunately, it’s the only thing you’ll be able to do.
How Much Can You Sell a Wix Website For?
Ultimately, the price of how much you can sell a website depends on 3 things:
- How many visitors it’s getting
- How much money it’s currently making per month
- How much money it could make per month
And the general rule of thumb is that a website should sell for 6x its yearly profit. So if it was making $1,000 per year, a reasonable sale price would be $6,000 per year.
That’s providing the incoming is sustainable, of course. If there was a risk of the income falling then as you can imagine, the price would be much less.
The downside here, however, is that very few Wix websites get high volumes of traffic & so overall, Wix websites aren’t worth very much.
Couple that with the fact that Wix websites are much harder to transfer in a sale & are much harder to sell in general because many people don’t like them & in all honesty, you’re gonna have a hard time getting a good price for a Wix website.
Even if your Wix website is earning good money you’ll still be unlikely to sell it for a good amount because most professionals stay well clear of the Wix platform & prefer platforms like WordPress instead.
But, let’s say your site is making money & you’re willing to take a hit on the sale. How do you actually go about selling it & where’s the best place to find a buyer?
Let’s take a look.
How To Sell a Wix Website
To sell a Wix website the first thing you’ll need to do is find a buyer & to do that, we recommend posting your site for sale on the Flippa marketplace.
There are many marketplaces available but that’s the most well-known & it’s the one both I & Simon have personally used in the past.
Or, of course, you may have arranged an in-person sale to somebody you know.
Either way, once you’re ready to sell your site you simply need to set up a way to receive payment (and we recommend PayPal for added security).
Then, once the buyer has paid you just need to go ahead & give them your Wix account details – making sure that you have no personal data stored there (and no credit card or payment method left activated).
And that’s pretty much it. The buyer will now be in possession of the account with the website & they’ll be able to go ahead & make any changes.
The Bottom Line
Selling a Wix website isn’t the easiest or safest process in the world but it’s certainly possible & if you want to do it, you simply need to be prepared to transfer your entire Wix account to the buyer.
However, what we will say is that you generally shouldn’t expect to get too much of a high price for a Wix website because there not generally highly sought after.
The reason for that is because they’re difficult to convert to more popular platforms like WordPress & it requires a lot of work to convert them, so many people avoid Wix sites.
Of course, though, there are some people out there that prefer Wix websites & if you put your Wix website up for sale, who knows, you may get lucky & find a buyer.
And if you do find a buyer for your Wix website then we hope that our blog post above helps you out with actually carrying out the sale. 🙂
