Here at Commission Academy, we teach niche affiliate marketing & as a result, one of the most common questions we get asked is “can a blog have more than one niche?“.

In other words, for those who don’t yet know what a niche is, that means can a blog have multiple topics?

So to answer this question once & for all, we decided to put this blog post together outlining whether or not a blog can have multiple topics or niches and the pros & cons of a single topic vs a multi-topic blog.

Without further ado then, let’s dive right in.

Can a Blog Have More Than One Niche?

Technically speaking, yes, a blog can have more than one niche or it can have multiple topics all on the same website, housed under 1 roof.

But, if you’re looking to earn revenue from the blog, having more than one niche or multiple topics is not a good idea. In fact, it’s actually a very bad idea.

Why?

Well, put simply, the best way to succeed at marketing is to make your promotions as targeted as you possibly can. The more targeted they are, the higher your conversions will be & the more money you will make.

So to do this, you need to know your audience. More specifically, you want to know exactly who your audience is & exactly what they are interested in.

That way, you can promote the relevant product to them, at the right time.

And literally, the easiest way you could ever do this is by creating a laser-targeted niche affiliate blog that focuses on just one single topic.

So, for example, let’s say you create a niche affiliate blog that focuses on the single topic of robot vacuums & on it, you publish robot-vacuum-related content, such as:

  • Do Robot Vacuums Work In The Dark?
  • Can Robot Vacuums Suck Up Bugs?
  • Why Won’t My Robot Vacuum Charge?

This content will then get listed in search engines (such as Google) & people who are searching for those things will potentially land on your website.

The good news is that if they do, you will know exactly what to promote.

For example, if they land on the article titled “Do Robot Vacuums Work In The Dark?”, you could either promote a robot vacuum that works in the dark or lights that can be set on a timer.

And if they land on the “Why Won’t My Robot Vacuum Charge?” article then you know that you’ll likely want to promote a replacement charger or battery.

Either way, you know this person at this moment in time is interested in robot vacuums & as an affiliate marketer, that’s very powerful information to know.

But on the flip side, let’s say you have a multi-topic blog & this blog is not only about robot vacuums but it’s also about pressure washers.

A user lands on your website from a search engine exactly as we described in the previous example but they now click from a robot vacuum article to a pressure washer article.

What are they now interested in? Pressure washers or robot vacuums?

What should you promote to them from this page?

The simple answer is that you don’t know.

As a result, your conversion rates will suffer because you can no longer guarantee that what you promote is going to be what the visitor actually wants.

And that’s one of the biggest downsides of trying to run a multi-topic blog or trying to have a blog with more than one niche.

But on top of that, there’s another big downside as well.

Blogs With Multiple Topics Are Harder To Rank

If you own a blog & create content online then one of your main sources of visitors will almost certainly be search engines like Google, Yahoo & Bing.

But did you know that blogs with multiple topics are harder to rank?

That’s right – you see, search engines have algorithms that aim to determine the expertise of the person (or people) publishing content on a website or blog.

Google, for example, have an algorithm named E.A.T which stands for Expertise, Authority & Trust.

So naturally, if you have a website that focuses on just 1 specific topic, you are going to be seen as an expert on that particular topic.

And as a result, the search engines will rank you higher, meaning you’ll be able to get more visitors through to your website & most importantly, you’ll be able to earn more money.

But don’t worry as this doesn’t mean you actually need to be an expert on the subject. It simply means that you should focus on a specific subject to demonstrate expertise.

Or in other words, just focus on 1 specific & the search engines will assume you’re an expert.

Multiple Niches On One Website Can Be Tempting

We do appreciate that it can be tempting to add multiple niches to one website, especially if you’re website is starting to rank quite nicely.

You may think “if I add this niche, I can benefit from my site’s authority & gain a head start” but unfortunately, it will often cause more harm than good.

Unless that is, the niches are very closely interlinked.

So, for example, if you had a blog in the hiking niche you wouldn’t want to then try & combine it with a blog about football or video games.

But what you could potentially do if you had gained solid momentum & exhausted the majority of your hiking keywords is expand it into something that’s very much interlinked such as, say, camping.

That’s a scenario where it could possibly work but again, it’s not an ideal scenario because it means your audience will no longer be as targeted as it once was.

So the ideal in that scenario would be to continue pushing with the hiking blog until it’s gained enough momentum to sustain itself & then look to launch a separate niche blog in the camping niche.

But the reality is more often than not, you shouldn’t even need to venture into multiple niches.

How Much Can a Niche Blog Make?

Many people think that in order to make big money from niche affiliate marketing they need to create & manage lots of different niche websites, but that’s simply not true.

In fact, one single niche affiliate website could quite easily generate hundreds of thousands of dollars per year & many affiliates have become rich with just one single niche blog.

To highlight that, let’s take a look at the income potential of a niche blog.

For our example, we’ll pretend that we’re promoting products via Amazon Associates which pays a 4% commission & that the products we’re promoting have an average price of $40.

Let’s take a look at the earnings breakdown based on the number of visitors to our site:

As you can see, with just 50,000 visitors one single niche blog could make over $6,750 & please do bear in mind that those estimates are on the lower end of the scale.

Increase the average purchase rate to 10% by adding remarketing & you could quite easily bag yourself well over $12,000 to $15,000 per month… All from one single niche blog.

Should You Stick To One Specific Niche?

Yes, yes & yes again. As mentioned above, we appreciate it can be very tempting to target multiple niches from your blog & it can seem like a good option but from experience, we can tell you that it’s not.

Trying to succeed in multiple niches from the same blog or website will result in reduced conversion rates & lower overall search engine rankings.

So instead, it’s best to work with only one niche at a time & if you truly do want to venture into multiple niches then you should use multiple websites to do so.

And your plan of action should look something like this:

  1. Launch first niche website & create content
  2. When this website generates revenue, re-invest it into hiring writers
  3. Once the website can maintain itself & generate a profit, consider a second niche
  4. Use the profits from website A to invest in content for website B
  5. Repeat the process & build a niche empire

You should always make sure your initial niche gains enough momentum & can maintain itself before venturing into a second niche otherwise you will be dividing your efforts.

The way I like to think of it is as if you have multiple sunflowers but only 1 teaspoon of water. If you tried to spread that across all the sunflowers they’d all wither and die, but focus on giving it to only one & it would grow tall & healthy. It’s the same with dividing efforts across niche websites.

You need to give your first website 100% effort, then reinvest to make sure the effort level is maintained. Then, once the effort is maintained (by writers, for example) you can move on & put 100% effort into a second website.

Whereas if you tried to launch 2 websites from the off, you would be diving your efforts 50% each & as a result, it’d be much harder to see success.

So always stick with 1 specific niche & only ever consider expanding after that one becomes a success.

The Bottom Line

We understand that it can be really tempting to launch a blog with more than one niche or multiple topics especially if you have lots of interests & are hyped by all the money but could potentially make, but ultimately it’s best to stick with one niche.

And as we’ve mentioned above, one niche blog can generate more than enough money on its own.
