{"id":4705,"date":"2022-07-31T16:22:29","date_gmt":"2022-07-31T15:22:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/commission.academy\/blog\/?p=4705"},"modified":"2022-07-31T16:22:30","modified_gmt":"2022-07-31T15:22:30","slug":"can-a-blog-have-more-than-one-niche-or-multiple-topics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/commission.academy\/blog\/can-a-blog-have-more-than-one-niche-or-multiple-topics\/","title":{"rendered":"Can a Blog Have More Than One Niche or Multiple Topics?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here at <a href=\"https:\/\/commission.academy\">Commission Academy<\/a>, we teach niche affiliate marketing &amp; as a result, one of the most common questions we get asked is &#8220;<em>can a blog have more than one niche?<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other words, for those who don&#8217;t yet know what a niche is, that means can a blog have multiple topics?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So to answer this question once &amp; for all, we decided to put this blog post together outlining whether or not a blog can have multiple topics or niches and the pros &amp; cons of a single topic vs a multi-topic blog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without further ado then, let&#8217;s dive right in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can a Blog Have More Than One Niche?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Technically speaking, yes, a blog can have more than one niche or it can have multiple topics all on the same website, housed under 1 roof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, if you&#8217;re looking to earn revenue from the blog, having more than one niche or multiple topics is not a good idea. In fact, it&#8217;s actually a very bad idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, put simply, <a href=\"https:\/\/commission.academy\/blog\/is-affiliate-marketing-dead\/\">the best way to succeed at marketing<\/a> is to make your promotions as targeted as you possibly can. The more targeted they are, the higher your conversions will be &amp; the more money you will make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So to do this, you need to know your audience. More specifically, you want to know exactly who your audience is &amp; exactly what they are interested in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That way, you can promote the relevant product to them, at the right time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And literally, the easiest way you could ever do this is by creating a <a href=\"https:\/\/commission.academy\/blog\/how-to-choose-an-affiliate-marketing-niche\/\">laser-targeted niche<\/a> affiliate blog that focuses on just one single topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, for example, let&#8217;s say you create a niche affiliate blog that focuses on the single topic of robot vacuums &amp; on it, you publish robot-vacuum-related content, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Do Robot Vacuums Work In The Dark?<\/li><li>Can Robot Vacuums Suck Up Bugs?<\/li><li>Why Won&#8217;t My Robot Vacuum Charge?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This content will then get listed in search engines (such as Google) &amp; people who are searching for those things will potentially land on your website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The good news is that if they do, you will know <strong>exactly<\/strong> what to promote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, if they land on the article titled &#8220;Do Robot Vacuums Work In The Dark?&#8221;, you could either promote a robot vacuum that works in the dark or lights that can be set on a timer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And if they land on the &#8220;Why Won&#8217;t My Robot Vacuum Charge?&#8221; article then you know that you&#8217;ll likely want to promote a replacement charger or battery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Either way, you know this person at this moment in time is interested in robot vacuums &amp; <a href=\"https:\/\/commission.academy\/blog\/life-as-an-affiliate-marketer\/\">as an affiliate marketer<\/a>, that&#8217;s very powerful information to know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But on the flip side, let&#8217;s say you have a multi-topic blog &amp; this blog is not only about robot vacuums but it&#8217;s also about pressure washers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A user lands on your website from a search engine exactly as we described in the previous example but they now click from a robot vacuum article to a pressure washer article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What are they now interested in? Pressure washers or robot vacuums?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What should you promote to them from this page?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The simple answer is that <strong>you don&#8217;t know<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a result, your conversion rates will suffer because you can no longer guarantee that what you promote is going to be what the visitor actually wants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that&#8217;s one of the biggest downsides of trying to run a multi-topic blog or trying to have a blog with more than one niche.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But on top of that, there&#8217;s another big downside as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Blogs With Multiple Topics Are Harder To Rank<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you own a blog &amp; create content online then one of your main sources of visitors will almost certainly be search engines like Google, Yahoo &amp; Bing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But did you know that blogs with multiple topics are harder to rank?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s right &#8211; you see, search engines have algorithms that aim to determine the expertise of the person (or people) publishing content on a website or blog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2021\/03\/12\/google-e-a-t\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">have an algorithm named E.A.T<\/a> which stands for Expertise, Authority &amp; Trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So naturally, if you have a website that focuses on just 1 specific topic, you are going to be seen as an expert on that particular topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And as a result, the search engines will rank you higher, meaning you&#8217;ll be able to get more visitors through to your website &amp; most importantly, you&#8217;ll be able to earn more money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But don&#8217;t worry as this doesn&#8217;t mean you actually need to <em><strong>be<\/strong><\/em> an expert on the subject. It simply means that you should focus on a specific subject to <em>demonstrate<\/em> expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or in other words, just focus on 1 specific &amp; the search engines will <em>assume<\/em> you&#8217;re an expert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Multiple Niches On One Website Can Be Tempting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We do appreciate that it can be tempting to add multiple niches to one website, especially if you&#8217;re website is starting to rank quite nicely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may think &#8220;if I add this niche, I can benefit from my site&#8217;s authority &amp; gain a head start&#8221; but unfortunately, it will often cause more harm than good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unless that is, the niches are very closely interlinked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, for example, if you had a blog in the hiking niche you wouldn&#8217;t want to then try &amp; combine it with a blog about football or video games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But what you could potentially do if you had gained solid momentum &amp; exhausted the majority of your hiking keywords is expand it into something that&#8217;s very much interlinked such as, say, camping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s a scenario where it could possibly work but again, it&#8217;s not an ideal scenario because it means your audience will no longer be as targeted as it once was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So the ideal in that scenario would be to continue pushing with the hiking blog until it&#8217;s gained enough momentum to sustain itself &amp; then look to launch a separate niche blog in the camping niche.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the reality is more often than not, you shouldn&#8217;t even need to venture into multiple niches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Much Can a Niche Blog Make?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many people think that in order to make big money from niche affiliate marketing they need to create &amp; manage lots of different niche websites, but that&#8217;s simply not true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, one single niche affiliate website could quite easily generate hundreds of thousands of dollars per year &amp; <a href=\"https:\/\/commission.academy\/blog\/can-affiliate-marketing-make-you-rich\/\">many affiliates have become rich<\/a> with just one single niche blog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To highlight that, let&#8217;s take a look at the income potential of a niche blog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For our example, we&#8217;ll pretend that we&#8217;re promoting products via Amazon Associates which pays a 4% commission &amp; that the products we&#8217;re promoting have an average price of $40.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let&#8217;s take a look at the earnings breakdown based on the number of visitors to our site:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"255\" src=\"https:\/\/commission.academy\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/niche-blog-estimation-1024x255.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4714\" srcset=\"https:\/\/commission.academy\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/niche-blog-estimation-1024x255.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/commission.academy\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/niche-blog-estimation-300x75.jpg 300w, https:\/\/commission.academy\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/niche-blog-estimation-768x191.jpg 768w, https:\/\/commission.academy\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/niche-blog-estimation.jpg 1089w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As you can see, with just 50,000 visitors one single niche blog could make over $6,750 &amp; please do bear in mind that those estimates are on the lower end of the scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Increase the average purchase rate to 10% by adding remarketing &amp; you could quite easily bag yourself well over $12,000 to $15,000 per month&#8230; All from one single niche blog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Should You Stick To One Specific Niche?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, yes &amp; yes again. As mentioned above, we appreciate it can be very tempting to target multiple niches from your blog &amp; it can <em>seem<\/em> like a good option but from experience, we can tell you that it&#8217;s not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trying to succeed in multiple niches from the same blog or website will result in reduced conversion rates &amp; lower overall search engine rankings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So instead, it&#8217;s best to work with only one niche at a time &amp; if you truly do want to venture into multiple niches then you should use multiple websites to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And your plan of action should look something like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Launch first niche website &amp; create content<\/li><li>When this website generates revenue, re-invest it into hiring writers<\/li><li>Once the website can maintain itself &amp; generate a profit, consider a second niche<\/li><li>Use the profits from website A to invest in content for website B<\/li><li>Repeat the process &amp; build a niche empire<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You should always make sure your initial niche gains enough momentum &amp; can maintain itself before venturing into a second niche otherwise you will be dividing your efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The way I like to think of it is as if you have multiple sunflowers but only 1 teaspoon of water. If you tried to spread that across all the sunflowers they&#8217;d all wither and die, but focus on giving it to only one &amp; it would grow tall &amp; healthy. It&#8217;s the same with dividing efforts across niche websites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You need to give your first website 100% effort, then reinvest to make sure the effort level is maintained.
